Band-Aid Approach Doesn't Help "Doc Fix"

Press Release

Eighty million Americans rely on Medicare for their health care needs. It is critical that there are enough doctors to provide this care. This year alone, Congress has had several votes to temporarily prevent a 21 percent cut in Medicare's physician reimbursement rates. Although these cuts have been delayed until June, it is like treating the problem with a band-aid. Instead, it calls for a responsible and permanent fix.
For the past nine years, Congressman Wamp has fought to replace the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) with a formula that more closely mirrors doctors' actual costs. Most recently, he co-sponsored the Ensuring the Future Physician Workforce Act of 2009 to provide a reliable Medicare payment schedule. With the rising costs of practicing medicine, this permanent solution would give physicians the stability needed to plan financially for the future and assure seniors access to care they need.
